Glen Fiona Syrah 1999
Puncheon Aged

The
Winemakers Notes: Perfect climatic conditions
in Vintage 1999 produced this stellar example
of Walla Walla Valley Syrah. This wine was co-fermented
with Viognier, the noble and rare Rhone white
grape, which brings great elegance and aromas
to Syrah, even at only 10% of the assemblage.
In the spirit of Cote-Rotie, the Rhones
most northerly appellation, this wine respects
the traditional emcepagement like no other Syrah-based
wine from the Pacific Northwest.
In
this wine one finds bakers cocoa, ripe blackberry
and even white peppercorn, a pleasant and piquant
alter-ego of the block spice. It easily succeeds
in providing a sensational addition to the Rhone-style
section of your cellar. Glen Fionas benchmark
wines are made from Walla Walla fruit, and they
continue to be the winerys finest offerings
in its range of appellation-based Syrahs.
An
age-worthy, finely structured wine, the 1999 Glen
Fiona Walla Walla Valley Syrah is fully capable
of reaching its peak between 2007 and 2009. If
you cant wait, it shows well now and will
be a pleasant and perfect accompaniment to peppercorn
steak, grilled vegetables, salmon, lamb chops
or kebabs.

Tasting Institute
92 Points (Exceptional)
Deep red-purple hue. Perfumed dark fruit
aromas show floral notes and very little oak influence.
Taut and bright on the attack with a moderately
full body and a long, lean finish. This looks
to have great cellaring potential.

Parker Rated
The
1999 Syrah Puncheon-Aged (1480 cases were produced)
is a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier.
It boasts dark cherry and candied raspberry as
well as blackberry aromas. Medium-bodied, fresh
and well-made, it is a juicy, black raspberry-dominated,
satin-textured wine. It is full-flavored and harmonious.
Drink it over the next 6 years.
Wine
Spectator
Soft, ripe and round, with meaty, earthy notes
adding interest to the solid black cherry and blackberry
flavors, which linger gently on the finish. Drink
now through 2005. |

Tasting Notes
This wines color is dark opaque purple, like
fountain pen ink. The aromas of black berry and
currant make your mouth water. The flavors reveal
a smoky black cherry base with tones of raspberry,
cinnamon, and exotic spices. They are sweet and
enticing when first tasted, and hold with a firm
spine of tannins that are nicely rounded.
Properly balanced and well structured this wine
is great with pot roast. The finish is long and
makes you want another glass. |
| This is the last wine to be made for Glen Fiona by winemaker, Berle W. Figgins, Jr. , (a.k.a. Rusty). Rusty has moved on to become winemaker for another winery in the Walla Walla Valley. |
